The Westgrove Hotel (my review)

The Westgrove Hotel and Conference Centre, Clane, Naas, Co. Kildare

This week the lovely Maja from The Westgrove Hotel invited me down for a stay in the hotel and to check out all the activities to do with children.  Myself and my sister headed off on Tuesday morning with Harry (6yrs), Georgia (4yrs), Ryan (4yrs), Sam and Holly (both nearly 2Yrs old).  The kids were soooo excited about going on a little holiday!!

When we arrived Maja showed us around the hotel.  Facilities include Groovies kids club, swimming pool, restaurant and bar, conference rooms and a Spa.  There is also a big Supervalu in the car park with a Euro shop and a few boutiques.

Harry, Georgia and Ryan were eager to go to the kids club so we popped them in there while we went to our room to get unpacked.  The girls in the kids club were so welcoming and friendly.  I was quite nervous leaving Ryan but he just ran off and got straight into painting with the girls!!

We stayed in one of their executive apartments.  It was so spacious and perfect for a family stay.  The bedroom had two single beds, one double bed and one king size bed (not forgetting two cots also).  There was a separate spacious living room and a kitchen (which was so handy for storing babys’ bottles in fridge etc..)  The apartment itself is just basic nothing fancy  but what more could you want when you’re travelling with children.

After we got sorted in the room we went to collect the three messers from the kids club. They didn’t want to leave!!  The kids club opens during the school holidays and midterm breaks.  The opening hours are 11-1pm and 5-9pm which is super if you want a bit of me time to chill out or to have dinner in peace.

We decided to take a trip to Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park (15mins in car from hotel).  The park is set on the edge of the Bog Of Allen – Ireland’s largest peatland.   For those of you who have never been I would highly recommend it.  Helen on the admissions desk was so friendly and helpful telling us where to go, what to do etc.. The weather that day was pretty bad so thank God there was an indoor play centre.

Funky forest features:

  • Soft play area
  • Large ball pool
  • baby area
  • giant tubular slide
  • speedy cable run
  • v-neck rope bridge
  • fussball
  • air-hockey tables
  • a pirate ship

We then took a trip on the train around the park travelling through Ireland’s largest bogland which the kids loved.  It was lashing rain by then so we just had a quick look at the fairy garden.  There was silence for ten minutes while the kids stood in awe!!! That was all we got done at the park because of the weather but I cannot wait to go back.  The picnic area is fab so I will be bringing a picnic and staying for the day the next time.

Lullymore is open until 31st of August every day 10am-6pm and then every weekend, bank holiday and school holidays throughout the year.  Have a look on their website for their Special Events.

After we got back to the hotel we got ready for swimming.  They supply towels, swimming hats, armbands you name it at the pool so you don’t have to bring anything with you.  It was a heated pool with a separate baby pool and jacuzzi.  There was a little family changing room right beside the pool (so handy with small kids).  We must have spent over an hour in the pool the kids really loved it.

After swimming we dropped the older three back to the kids club while we had a sneaky glass of wine and chilled out in the bar after our fun filled day!!

Dinner was booked for 5.30 in the Assaggio Restaurant.  We got the kids and all sat down in the very child friendly restaurant where the staff couldn’t do enough for us.  I had the steak, Michelle had sea bass and we both agreed it was the tastiest food ever!!!!  The kids meals were pizza, spaghetti and meatballs and chicken goujons and chips (all fresh tasty food).  The kids scoffed their plates so huge thumbs up for the food!!!!

After dinner we went up to the room and got the kids into their pyjamas.  The kids club were having a movie night,  I actually don’t think I have ever seen the kids so hyper and excited!!  Off they went for movie night so Michelle and I got the babies to bed and watched the soaps.  By God I was exhausted!!! When the kids got back from movie night they were asleep within five minutes!!

If you are looking for a family friendly fun filled night away I would highly recommend  The Westgrove Hotel.

Harry’s review- I loved the kids room and the goodies at movie night.

Georgia’s review – I loved the pool and splashing everyone.

Ryan’s review – I loved the sweet shop (hahaha)

Thank you to The Westgrove Hotel for their warm welcome and for having us.  We will definitely be back.
